چکیده

The aim of this study was to determine whether forest clear-cuts during 2000–2011 could be detected as a decrease in surface height by combining Digital Surface Models (DSMs) from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and Tandem-X, and to evaluate the performance of this method using SRTM Xand C-band data as references representing the heights before logging. The study area was located in a Norway spruce-dominated forest estate in southeastern Norway. We interpolated 11-year DSM changes into a 10 m × 10 m raster, and averaged these changes per forest stand. Based on threshold values for DSM decreases we classified the pixels and stands into the categories “clear-cut” and “not clear-cut”, and compared this to a complete record of logged stands during 2000–2011. The classification accuracy was moderate or fairly good. A correct detection was achieved for 59%–67% of the clear-cut stands. Omission errors were most common, occurring in 33%–42% of the stands. Commission errors were found in 13%–21% of the clear-cut stands. The results obtained for X-band SRTM were only marginally better than for C-band. In conclusion, the combination of SRTM and Tandem-X has the potential of providing near global data sets for the recent 12 years’ logging, which should be particularly valuable for deforestation mapping.

Efficient simulation of SAR interferograms of large areas and of rugged terrain

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques are today applied in many areas of remote sensing, ranging from digital elevation model (DEM) generation to surface motion mapping and InSAR tomography. To enhance the understanding of the InSAR mapping process and to test new algorithms, accurate tools for the simulation of the topographic InSAR phase are necessary. Whereas the equati...

Demonstration of Current Measurements from Space by Along-Track SAR Interferometry with SRTM Data

We present one of the first studies in which interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) are analyzed with regard to the detectability of ocean surface current variations. The InSAR system of SRTM was designed for high-resolution topographic mapping, using two SAR antennas on a Space Shuttle with a cross-track separation of 60 m. For te...

Applications of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Elevation Data

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) was flown in February 2000 and collected the first ever high-resolution near-global digital elevation data. The final SRTM data have become widely available at 1 arc-second resolution for the United States and 3 arc-second resolution for other areas. This article reviews the background of the SRTM mission, the data quality characteristics of the SRTM ...

Srtm and Beyond: Current Situation and New Developments in Spaceborne Insar

SAR interferometry (InSAR) has become one of the most powerful tools in radar remote sensing. Generation of digital elevation models, measurement of glacier flows and mapping of earthquakes, volcanoes and subsidence are the most prominent applications of InSAR. For most of these applications continuous acquisition of SAR data from space over many years, like with the ERS-1/2 or Radarsat, is ind...

Validation of surface height from shuttle radar topography mission using shuttle laser altimeter

Spaceborne Interferometric SAR (InSAR) technology used in the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and spaceborne lidar such as Shuttle Laser Altimeter-02 (SLA-02) are two promising technologies for providing global scale digital elevation models (DEMs). Each type of these systems has limitations that affect the accuracy or extent of coverage. These systems are complementary in developing DE...
